THE BALLAD OF STOMPIN’ TOM (2018)

Director
Sudbury Theatre Centre
September – October 2018

What better way to open our season than with a show about legendary troubadour Stompin’ Tom Connors who immortalized Sudbury in Sudbury Saturday Night. This great Canadian icon’s fascinating life story is presented as a concert with flashbacks to his early years on the streets and to his breakout success in Timmins. His songs have become part of the Canadian cultural landscape and the show features some of Stompin’ Tom’s greatest hits including Bud the Spud, Tillsonburg, The Hockey Song and of course, Sudbury Saturday Night!

I have loved my two experiences working at the Sudbury Theatre Centre. They have an incredible team, and an incredible can-do attitude. So with an extraordinary cast and a brilliant design team, we created a version of the show that was truly a celebration of Stompin’ Tom, but also a celebration of community. In fact, we even had audience members on stage! I really like directing plays that are open enough that I can truly contribute to the storytelling; this play really offered that kind of space for a vision and I’m very proud of what we created.
