Gabriella wants action. Jackson wants a scholarship. Susan wants a family. In this new play by Rob Kempson, three disparate people find themselves bound together by desire, destiny, and a few scandalous photos. Trigonometry is about how far we go to get what we want—what we do to survive.

This was the third and final play in my series, The Graduation Plays. From the beginning of the trilogy, I knew that there would be three plays about the complex relationships between teachers and students. Produced with an incredible cast, I was very proud of this final instalment. To me, this piece represented a parental perspective, but it also represented the ways in which a given structure can influence both the form and content of a piece. I was inspired by Sarah Ruhl’s provocation around the shape of a play, as written in her book 100 Essays I Don’t Have Time To Write. She wondered what a triangle play would look like, and so did I.
